A $500 ad on John Chow dot Com, Adsense, ShoppingAds sucks, and Adsense II
I just purchased one of those $500 ads on JohnChow dot com, but before I get to that part let me just go over a few things.
Adsense
The new Adsense option I mentioned a few days ago and that lets you change the look of the ads on your site without the need to install new code is now available. To do this you go where it says “Adsense setup” and then “manage ads”. When I did this I did not find any ads listed where I could be able to change the appearance. As such I had to “import” the Adsense code of the ad I want to change. This extra step is only necessary once, and after this is done you can than change the setting for these ads. You can not however change the size of the ads, which makes sense. This new feature, which is a little late in coming, will make testing different ad versions a lot easier.
ShoppingAds sucks
Since the 8th of this month they have not shown any ads on my sites, including this blog. I don´t know if its because of the not so friendly posts I did here and on my blog in Portuguese. Although I have access to my account, I think I might have been banned. And it wasn´t for fraudulent clicks. For one I don´t get into that kind of stuff, and also because in about 10000 impressions I only received 6 (yes six!) clicks. Much like AuctionsAds, where I am still waiting to make money from my 114 referrals, ShoppingAds is the same sh*t. I am not sure if my family budget will be able to withstand the 64 cents I won´t make from them this month judging from the performance I had the first 8 days.
Adsense II
Talking about ShoppingAds and AuctionAds, Google is also testing an ad format very similar
to ShoppingAds. There still isn´t much information as to how this might work, but I leave you with a screenshot.
John Chow dot Com
Me and Rui from Text Link Easy just purchased a 300×250 banner on JohnChow.com. The price of the banner is $500 for 30 days. John Chow makes a nice $5000 per month on these ads alone. Rui and I will be splitting the ad during 30 days. Its not that we couldn´t afford the $500 each, but because it is a much better investment to rotate two ads. Because of the ensuing ad blindness an ad will get a lot of clicks in the beginning and then fall off gradually.
Here is a shot of Rui´s ad. Rui did these ads and he does a good job at them, you can leave me a comment if you´re interested. My ad is still in the making, and will run for the second 15 days. The reason for this is that I am looking to change my theme to allow for better placement of the new 125×125 banners I will be selling. I am not sure if I will go with a unique theme, but it is not very likely since there isn´t much time for me to get one done. Anyway, if you want to buy one of these 125 x125 ads in advance of the rush of visitors from the JohnChow ad please leave me a comment. I have already sold 2 and they are very reasonably priced at only $15 for a 30 day period. The price might however go up before the JohnChow ad runs.

wow… bold step with the $500 investment. I hope it pays off!
Its not really a big % of what I would normally spend on Adwords on a given month for all my sites, but it will be an interesting case study for me.
A”rush” of traffic? I think you wasted your money IMO.
Well, not a “RUSH”, but surelly some new visitors.
Worst case it will be a case study for me.
Good luck with the ad.. i bought an ad on John COW.com and I didnt get the flood of traffic i expected…
will you be posting how much traffic you get from the ad?
Hi Randy,
Yes, I will be posting results for both ads.
I will let you know how it goes.
