Why making money with sites is like going to the gym
It´s going to be two months since I started regularly going to the gym. It´s not like I am fat, but I am no where close to having a six pack either, not to mention the health benefits of regular exercise. The gym I signed-up at is a state of the art, brand new gym, and I´ve been going 5 times a week, and hour and a half per day. But you know what, after two months when I look at myself in the mirror I don´t really see much improvement.
Making money from your sites is much the same, you won´t see great results after only a short period of time. So why does it take long to get visitors and money?
- You can´t really put up any kind of site, and expect to get visitors or revenue in only a few days. It takes some time to get indexed, and to get decent search engine rankings and visitors
- Your URL should contain keywords, this is especially important if you are talking about mini-sites
- The keywords in the URL should have actual searches! If the “keywords” aren´t searched for then they are not really “keywords” are they?
- Don´t put up a mini-site for very competitive keywords. If there´s lots of competition, especially quality sites, than a mini-site won´t get ranked well enough to receive search engine traffic
- Use URLs with long tail keywords. Especially is these words have decent search volume (point 3). Lon tali keywords are easier to get to the top of search ranking, especially on Yahoo, where the weight given to the keywords in the URL is greater
- It´s important that your content match the keywords in the URL. If the domain has the keyword “travel”, than the site should be about traveling, online traveling, travel insurance, and travel agencies, just to give an example
- The content should be original. This has become increasingly important over the last year or so, especially if you count on getting any visitors from Google.
- Mini-sites don´t require that much work/time. I spend on average 15-30 minutes a month on each one. Just enough time to add fresh content.
- One mini-site won´t give you that much money, but many mini-sites can be very profitable
My goal is to get about $15-$20 from each mini-site per month, this by spending 15 to 30 minutes a month per site. A could probably make more money from each one, but I would have to devote more time to them, and right now I am somewhat stretched as it is. You can initially monetize these sites with Adsense, than add some affiliate programs that match the topic to the sites that get more visits. And remember, $17 a month from 100 mini-sites is $1700. And, you can do this on 30 to 35 hours a month!
