With or without WWW and how to redirect
In yesterday´s post, where I talked about Website Grader, one of the recommendations given for my blog was to have a permanent redirect between www.OnlineMoneyDot.com and OnlineMoneyDot.com.
Without getting into too much detail, first because it is not my specialty, and second because it´s boring, the OnlineMoneyDot.com website is seen as a different site from www.OnlineMoneyDot.com. What happens is that www.OnlineMoneyDot.com is considered a subdomain of OnlineMoneyDot.com, in much the same way as Forum.OnlineMoneyDot.com would be. Google will consider the “www” version a completely different site.
To take the maximum advantage of all your SEO work, and to avoid having incoming links to “both” sites, we should opt between one of the two versions. Here is one way of doing it:
- Go to your WordPress administration panel, and under “Options” and “General”, choose the version for your blog URL that you want to use.
- Install a plugin that will do the redirect one site to the other. Two of the available plugins are WWW-Redirect, and the Enforce www. Preference. I opted for the last one, and the installation and activation was a breeze. All you have to do is upload the plugin and activate it. There was no need for any additional configuration, since the option we make in Point 1 will prevail. Both of these plugins will also remove the “index.php” from the OnlineMoneyDot.com/index.php URL.
I opted for the OnlineMoneyDot.com version, without the “www“. I have always preferred this option, and all I really needed to do was create the redirect. One could argue that the reasons behind the early adoption of the “www” version of sites no longer makes sense, but the reality is that to this day the “www” version of sites is still more popular. In that respect I have always gone against the mainstream and opted for the non-”www” versions.
